INCLUSION-EXCLUSION: Texts from the Ethnographic Writing Workshop

Gianmarco Marzola

João Afonso Baptista

30.03.2025

This collection aims to capture the collective, experimental and creative spirit of the Ethnographic Writing Workshop held in the spring of 2024 by the ‘Diversities: Ethnographies in the Contemporary World’ research group at the Institute of Social Sciences of the University of Lisbon. The workshop had 12 participants, some of whom were new to ethnographic writing. Each participant plunged into their empirical experiences as a new heuristic and epistemological adventure, demonstrating exceptional commitment and impressive dedication. The texts presented are the result of work carried out over the course of three sessions and continued outside of them, driven by the discussions and activities developed during these meetings. During the sessions, each participant wrote their own text and contributed to their colleagues' texts, discussing critical issues that emerge in ethnographic practice and suggesting new approaches after carefully reading the texts. On two occasions, the workshop was attended by two guests who significantly enriched the ethnographic creative process. The second session was attended by Felipe Milanez, from the Federal University of Bahia, and the third by Humberto Martins, from the University of Alto Douro and Trás-os-Montes. DOI: https://doi.org/10.25660/agora0031.bsqb-np02

DOI: https://doi.org/10.25660/agora0031.bsqb-np02

Lado B presents unpublished texts in a non-academic format, with authorial and editorial freedom. Authors are invited to share unpublished texts kept in their drawers that may arise from academic or scientific interests, but which for whatever reason have not been transformed into a conventional product such as an article or chapter. There is also room for essays and experimentalism, with an openness to other fields (literature, poetry, dramatic or theatre texts, etc). Lado B defends the dignity and anthropological fidelity of essayistic and literary writing and invites authors to present literary or poetic texts in the construction of their narratives, considering that writing, like fieldwork, is above all a relational, affective, emotional, sensory and aesthetic process.
