Etnografias da revolução em revista
Summary
In October of 1973, the newly organized International Conference Group on Modern Portugal, spearheaded by Douglas Wheeler (historian), Joyce Riegelhaupt (anthropologist) and others, held its first meeting on the campus of the University of New Hampshire.1 At that time, I was beginning my third year of graduate school in the Department of Anthropology at Brown University. I was invited to attend the meeting because I was developing a project to study Portuguese migrant women in France. As Harry Makler and Lawrence S. Graham (1979: xx) have written, “the main objective of the conference – as well as of the two others that followed – was to encourage research on Portugal’s recent history, its politics and government, its (then) colonial system, its class structure and its economic processes”. Unpredicted by anyone at the time, and just over six months later, on April 25, 1974, the so-called Carnation Revolution occurred, forever transforming Portugal and setting it on a new path.
